Find something, something that excites you and brings out other sides of you that you want to further explore.

Hey all!

At last the time has come!!! I am thrilled to start this new blogging journey with you guys. I want to start off by saying WHOA, I can't believe I am doing the thang. I have thought about creating a blog for close to a year now and every time I brought myself to actually start my blog, life happened and the idea slipped away. Well not this time, because your girl is here and she is ready to write, create, connect and share.

Let me start with the basics, who am I and what exactly am I doing with my life? Well my name is Iris and I am in my 6th year of teaching, yeah that's right I am a middle school teacher working with our youth. The best part of my job is making a difference of course but also hanging out with kids and cracking jokes on a daily basis. The school I currently teach at aligns so perfectly with my educational philosophy and the kids I work with are exactly the population of kids I always wanted to mentor/teach which is one of the biggest reasons I feel so content when it comes to my career. Don't get me wrong though teaching is HARD and that is part of the reason that brought me here to this blog. I think this statement goes beyond just educators but I speak from my experience when I say you need to find something, something that excites you and brings out other sides of you that you want to further explore. For me that something came in the form of a  passion and that passion is cooking!

My blog will primarily be a space for me to share recipes but to also talk about food and culture. I firmly believe that you can't just talk about food in isolation one has to mention family, culture, tradition etc. In my case I attribute my passion for cooking to the discovery of my self identity and acceptance and appreciation of my culture and our traditions. As a Mexican-American woman I walked the line of what it means to be American but not enough as well as Mexican but also not enough so the cultural assimilation was real on both sides but at last it was my journey and it continues to be.

Thank you for reading and I truly hope the content in this blog resonates with you in some way and I hope the love and passion I have for culture, cooking and authenticity transcends to you.

  1. Yay! Will there be a recipe for “homemade” Mac and cheese?
